Athole/Champurada

Athole is a drink made from masa. The same stuff you use to make corn tortillas and tamales. Sounds weird, huh? It probably is really weird for someone who didn’t grow up drinking it.
Champurada is Athole with chocolate. I like it better with chocolate.
These drinks are served hot and usually with a Gordita to dip in it.

1Cup Masa or Maseca | |
6Cups Water | |
1 Cinnamon stick | |
Sugar (for Champurada) | |
Mexican chocolate (Ibarra) for Champurada |
Directions

Athole
Add I cup masa to 3 cups of water and dissolve using your hands to mix it. In a pot, combine 3 cups of water with the cinnamon stick and heat to a boil. Once it boils, remove the cinnamon stick and add the masa mix. Keep stiring until it thickens. Add more water if necesary. You can add sugar if you want a sweeter version.
Champurada:

Mexican chocolate (Ibarra)
When you heat the water with cinnamon, add about a tsp of sugar. Once it boils remove the cinnamon, add the masa and about 1/2 cup milk along with a piece of the chocolate. Keep stiring until the chocolate dissolves and the mixture thickens.
